Frisbie Center for Cancer Care

Being diagnosed with cancer can be an especially stressful and overwhelming experience. That's why Frisbie Center for Cancer Care is committed to giving our patients access to leading cancer care experts and groundbreaking clinical trials. We provide this care with compassion — both physically and emotionally to patients who are diagnosed with cancer and have made the decision to seek leading-edge treatment close to home.

The Frisbie Center for Cancer Care is an affiliate of the Norris Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) in Lebanon, NH. This means that patients receive comprehensive, world-class cancer care right here at Frisbie Memorial Hospital. In the event that Frisbie Memorial Hospital cannot provide services within its own Oncology Department, patients have the option of receiving care directly from DHMC or at other cancer centers locally.

Our cancer care specialists are leaders in their field. In fact, our board-certified oncologists and board-certified hematologist are faculty members at Dartmouth Medical School and are often called upon to lecture nationally on cancer issues and treatments. Highly regarded for their cancer research, they participate in important clinical trials, serve on statewide committees for cancer care, and have published findings in prestigious medical journals. They also maintain professional relationships with other leading experts who practice in diverse areas such as bone marrow transplants and gynecological oncology.

In addition to accessing this leading expertise, we offer the latest cancer treatments in a comfortable setting, including:

  • Chemotherapy treatment
  • Therapeutic phlebotomy
  • Bone marrow biopsies
  • Clinically supportive cancer treatments
  • Referrals to local radiation treatment centers
  • Referrals to surgical consultations
  • Chemotherapy for treatment of multiple sclerosis
  • General anesthesia for bone marrow biopsies

Our recently renovated 5,200 square-foot facility includes:

  • Larger treatment areas
  • Private rooms
  • Patient library/waiting room with computer access to the latest oncology information
  • Nine treatment chairs with television and laptop computer hookups
  • Oncology-designated parking spaces

Frisbie Memorial Hospital believes it is absolutely necessary to treat the whole person throughout the cancer experience. We make a special effort to provide cancer care that ranges from diagnosis through post treatment. Our mission is to offer comprehensive cancer care — treating the clinical and emotional needs of both the patient and the family. We encourage you and your family to participate in a variety of related therapies, including:

  • Nutritional therapy
  • Individual and group expressive therapy
  • Care Management Program
  • Rehabilitation (physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy services)
  • Lymphedema support
  • Anesthesia support
  • Reiki (offered in-house and in group classes)

Frisbie Memorial Hospital enjoys a strong affiliation with the American Cancer Society and offers many educational programs such as Look Good, Feel Better; I Can Cope; Road to Recovery; Reach to Recovery, and others.

National Cancer Research

As an affiliate of Norris Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, we have access to clinical trials and studies to look for the latest in cancer treatment options.
Our patients have the opportunity to participate in a research study for many cancer-related conditions, including:

  • Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma/Hodgkin's lymphoma
  • Leukemia
  • Melanoma
  • Breast cancer
  • Lung cancer
  • Colon and rectal cancer
  • Stomach, pancreatic, esophageal and other gastrointestinal malignancies
  • Prostate, bladder cancer, renal cancer and other genito-urinary malignancies
  • Head and neck cancer
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Adrenal cancer

An important study that originated here is a national initiative to explore an experimental medication called IRESSA, which was developed for the treatment of a rare form of adrenal cancer. The study, which was written by our cancer specialists, is one of only two experimental studies for this disease currently available. This study has also been opened at the prestigious M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston; Norris Cancer Center at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles; and The Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

According to Vivek Samnotra, MD, clinical director of the Frisbie Center for Cancer Care and assistant professor of medicine at Dartmouth Medical School, "Frisbie Memorial Hospital is extremely selective when choosing the studies in which our patients participate. We give our patients access to the latest technologies and research for their specific cancer. We also ensure that our patients are continually updated and informed of how they are progressing in the study."
