Geriatric Psychiatry

Frisbie Memorial Hospital's Geriatric Psychiatry Program specializes in caring for people age 65 years and older with mental and behavioral health issues, including dementia, Alzheimer's disease, and major depression in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The program is comprised of a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, social workers, and support staff who provide patient medication management, psychotherapy, and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). They are certified Dementia Care Specialists who work closely with caregivers to develop a comprehensive psychiatric care plan for families' aging loved ones.

As certified Dementia Care Specialists, they have a shared understanding about the stages of dementia which assists staff in considering the person inside of the physical body, the developmental levels associated with the stages of dementia, as well as the patient's remaining abilities and behavior and communication. The belief is that organizations committed to utilizing this approach are likewise committed to implementing the "best-abilities approach" systems-wide.
