Outpatient physical rehabilitation treatments and services
Through our dedicated rehabilitation programs, we support the comprehensive physical and emotional needs of you or your loved one.
Aquatic therapy
Aquatic therapy promotes muscle relaxation and circulation to potentially decrease pain and sensitivity. It can also improve your body awareness, balance, stability and strength. We perform this type of therapy one-on-one in a pool with warm water (92 degrees), which supports your joints by reducing gravity. Aquatic therapy can be beneficial for all ages, and you don't need to be a swimmer to participate.
There are possible benefits of aquatic therapy, including:
- Better alignment and posture
- Greater ease of movement
- Improved agility and endurance
- More range of motion and flexibility
Cancer rehabilitation
Through one-on-one cardiovascular, balance and strength training, we aim to better your quality of life by:
- Enhancing muscular power and endurance
- Improving heart and lung performance
- Increasing balance and flexibility
- Reducing depression
- Relieving fatigue
Our exercise program is rooted in the protocols established by the University of Northern Colorado Cancer Rehabilitation Institute, which has been researching the impact of exercise on cancer patients since 1996. We have adapted the four-phase program and combined it with our expertise. This enables us to use a multidisciplinary approach, which is especially beneficial if you're experiencing chemotherapy toxicity or deconditioning from your primary treatments.
During our initial evaluation, we look at your well-being holistically while also considering your current cancer treatment. We perform certain tests to measure your cardiovascular performance and strength at the start of our program, which enables us to track your progress.
Caregiver training
If you have dementia, we will work directly with your family or caregiver to promote safety and improve your functional ability. Our occupational therapists help you adapt to your environment by providing:
- Alternative care techniques
- Caregiver support and education
- Cueing strategies
- Diagnosis education
- Equipment recommendations
Fall prevention
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), falls are the leading cause of traumatic brain injuries in the U.S. These incidents account for nearly three million emergency department visits annually for older adults. If you have a history of falling, it isn't uncommon to develop a fear of it happening again. This unease can increase your risk of future falls and decrease your activity level, which may lead to a reduced quality of life.
If you are 65 years old or older and have falling concerns, our program is designed to decrease your risk of injury, maximize your safety and increase your ability to live independently. Our physical therapists will work one-on-one with you to improve your balance and increase your strength and endurance. The treatment plans and exercises we offer include:
- Ambulation and elevation training
- Balance assessments
- Balance training
- Daily functional activities
- Strength training
- Vestibular training
- Visual training
Functional dry needling
When muscles tighten, they become sore with knots, also known as trigger points. These can be painful and cause function loss. In some situations, knots may irritate joints, nerves and surrounding tissues. We use functional dry needling to stimulate and release trigger points by inserting small, thin needles into your muscles. Relief is often felt quickly as the muscle relaxes, leading to greater flexibility and comfort.
Functional skills assessment
We may perform a functional skills assessment to evaluate your attention, memory, insight, judgement, planning and problem-solving skills. This technique measures your ability to:
- Complete self-care tasks
- Drive safely
- Manage money and medication
- Perform leisurely activities
Gait analysis
Your gait is individual to you, so our team will develop a unique treatment plan to address your condition. In doing so, we consider your current level of activity and the primary difficulties preventing you from attaining your highest goals. We use advanced evaluation tools during gait analysis, such as the breathing assessment, selective functional movement assessment and the functional movement screen. These tools help us isolate and detect any issues so we can connect you to the best possible corrective activities.
Graston technique
Using the Graston technique, we can diagnose and treat areas of scar tissue. If the scar tissue is causing you discomfort or limiting your mobility, this type of specialized procedure enables us to break it up through a series of stretching exercises. The Graston technique works to promote realignment of the fibers, so they act like healthy tissue again.
In addition to aiding your continued everyday activities, this treatment may bring you additional benefits, including:
- Greater comfort and mobility
- Less need for anti-inflammatory medication
- Reduced treatment time
- Quicker recovery period
Joint mobilization
If you have swollen, irritated or misaligned joints because of age or injury, we can use joint mobilization therapy to assist you. This manual technique involves rhythmic, repetitive and passive movements of the joints to help reduce pain and improve your range and quality of motion.
Lymphedema management
We can provide effective care for lymphedema, which occurs when the lymphatic system is compromised because of surgical care, radiation, an injury or a congenital irregularity. As part of the body’s immune system, the lymphatic system helps to protect us from infection and disease. Within it, lymph fluid passes through lymph nodes which are connected by a network of lymph vessels. The nodes are found throughout the whole body. If left untreated, lymphedema poses a high risk of infection in the affected tissue and, eventually, the region of the body.
Common symptoms of lymphedema include swelling, hardening and skin discoloration of a body part, which may feel full, fatigued or heavy. You may also experience a wound or reduced mobility.
In our lymphedema management program, we use multiple types of complete or complex decongestive therapy (CDT) to treat chronic extremity lymphedema. Compression therapy is one of those treatment options, which involves:
- Exercises to activate the muscle and joint pump
- Multilayered bandages to improve muscle and joint pump efficiency
- Skin care to prevent infection
Another form of CDT is manual lymphatic drainage. We use this technique to reroute the lymph flow around blockages and into healthy vessels. Manual lymphatic drainage is very gentle and improves the function of the lymphatic system throughout the body. This type of therapy may be appropriate if you have been critically ill or experienced an amputation, joint replacement or vascular surgery.
Parkinson's disease therapy
Established to provide neurological care for movement issues associated with Parkinson's disease, our program has been shown to improve vocal loudness, intonation and voice quality nearly two years after treatment.
During our 16-session, four-week program, we work to improve your bodily skills by combining physical and occupational therapy techniques. As a result of at-home and carryover exercises, you may notice an improvement in your balance, walking and self-care abilities.
Post-concussion therapy
After a concussion, we will work with you and your caregiver to help you transition back to your daily routines, such as attending school or work.
Post-concussion therapy can help with:
- Cognitive deficits
- Compensatory techniques
- Management of symptoms
- Organizational skills
- Sequencing
- Task simulation
- Visual changes
Postsurgical care for upper extremity and hand injuries
With certified hand therapists (CHTs), we are able to evaluate and care for elbow, hand, shoulder and wrist conditions following your corrective procedure. Our CHTs have experience in splint fabrication, postsurgical rehabilitation, physical agent modalities and injury prevention.
We are able to treat the following postsurgical diagnoses:
- Carpal tunnel release
- Cubital tunnel release
- De Quervain's release
- Dupuytren's release
- Surgically repaired fractures
- Tendon repairs
- Thumb carpometacarpal (CM) joint replacement
- Trigger finger release
Specialized therapy for children
Our specially trained physical therapists treat infants, children and adolescents with serious brain injuries or conditions causing emotional dysregulation, which makes it more difficult to manage emotions. To help your child improve their behavioral or cognitive skills, we use computer-based and self-regulation programs that focus on:
- Emotional regulation skills
- Executive functioning skills
- Feeding and oral motor skills
- Fine motor control and coordination skills
- Gross motor control and coordination skills
- Motor planning skills
- Muscle tone and postural control skills
- Ocular motor skills
- Pragmatic skills
- Primary movement pattern skills
- Reflect integration skills
- Self-regulation skills
- Sensory processing skills
- Social skills
- Visual perceptual skills
We believe parents are the key to their child's success. As a result, we aim to work with you throughout your child's treatment to give them the care they deserve. When appropriate, our team helps integrate your loved one into the community-based organizations we collaborate with. In an individual or group setting, these organizations provide support for feeding, social skill development and mental or sensory processing.
Interactive cognitive and motor function training
Our pediatric specialists use a computer-based treatment tool to help your child read, talk, walk and plan or sustain attention. This model challenges them to clap their hands and tap their feet to match computer-generated, rhythmic sounds heard through headphones.
These movements and motor actions are then incorporated into therapeutic, game-like activities that include touching targets on a wall, bouncing a ball and multitasking using simple math.
Vestibular and balance management
If you have dizziness (vertigo), balance problems or a history of falls, our vestibular and balance management program is designed to help you achieve a higher level of functioning within a few therapy sessions. Our certified therapists will create a care plan for you that includes the use of various balance assessment tools.
Vision therapy
Despite impaired vision, we can help you or your loved one maintain independence and enjoy hobbies. We will suggest environmental adjustments, task modifications and compensatory techniques.
Benefits of vision therapy activities may include enhanced:
- Depth perception
- Eye movements
- Eye teaming
- Focus
- Peripheral vision
- Visualization
- Visual motor skills
- Vision perception
